RIDER INFORMATION:
BART is testing Aira, a video interpreter service designed to help blind and low-vision riders navigate to, from, and through the system. The pilot runs through Sunday, January 3, 2027.
Through the free Aira Explorer smartphone app, riders can connect with live, professionally trained visual interpreters. Using a rider’s phone camera, interpreters can describe surroundings, read signs and text, and help with tasks such as finding station entrances, locating fare gates and ticket vending machines, identifying the correct platform, and boarding the right train.
The pilot will help BART evaluate whether live, on-demand interpreting can make everyday trips easier for blind and low-vision customers.
